Three Best Cheap Road Bikes Under $200

700c Hyper SpinFit

8.0/10 Our Score
  • Brand: Hyper Bicycles
  • Frame Material: Aluminum
  • Frame Size: 19″
  • Wheel Size: 700c
  • Brake Style: Caliper
  • Number of Speeds: 21-speed
  • Weight: 14kg

While classified as a hybrid bike, the 700c Hyper SpinFit takes a lot more design inspiration from hybrid bikes instead of mountain bikes. When you’re in the market for a cheap road bike under $200, you’re not exactly expecting a visual masterpiece.

However, the 700c Hyper SpinFit looks fantastic. Both the frame and paint look exceptional. For the frame material, aluminum is the natural choice. It’s not the best quality but it’s good value for cheap road bikes under $200 bike.

The lightweight nature of the frame means that it’s a bike that’s easy to pedal. It’s made even easier by the fact that Hyper Bicycles are also offering a 21-speed Shimano shifter system on the bike. It’s no cheap knock-off either, every gear change feels snappy and crisp.

As the bike arrives mostly pre-assembled, the assembly process is also significantly easier than most bikes on the market. Even those new to bike assembly will be able to put this bike together in a couple of hours.

However, while you’re putting the bike together, you’ll notice a significant issue. The size of the handlebar and the grips are too small for the bike frame. If you want to ride the bike to its optimal level, you’ll need to get a new replacement handlebar that’s slightly larger.

It’s slightly disappointing that they made the choice to go with older style caliper brakes On top of that, some customers were reporting an issue with the front wheel rubbing against the brake pad. However, it’s not something that a good mechanic won’t be able to fix.

Aside from the few hitches, the 700c Hyper SpinFit is a great option for shoppers that are looking for an everyday road bike. The performance might be limited but it’s a good choice for a cyclist that’s looking for a budget option for their daily commute.

For a beginner rider this is a great bike to get yourself on the road and commuting without forking out a lot of money for you to only find out that cycling isn’t for you.

Pros

  • Lightweight
  • Solid frame design
  • 21-Speed Shifter System

Cons

  • Build quality not great
  • Features older style caliper brakes
  • Front wheel rubs against brake pad

Kent Gzr700 Road Bike

TOP PICK
9.0/10 Our Score
  • Brand: Kent International
  • Frame Material: Steel
  • Frame Size: 21″
  • Wheel Size: 700c
  • Brake Style: Single pivot alloy
  • Number of Speeds: 21-speed
  • Weight: 17kg

Kent International is on its way towards becoming a popular name in the cycling industry. They provide a variety of different bicycles all at budget price points. One of their best offerings is the Kent Gzr700 road bike.

It features a 21-inch high tensile steel frame, which makes the bike ideal for a wide variety of heights. However, if you’re below 5’7 then this bike might be a little bit too big for you!

Steel isn’t the first choice for many when it comes to a road bike because of the additional weight. However, Kent has done a good job of keeping the bike relatively lightweight.

It features Shimano 21-speed stem shifters, which allow you to change between the gears. However, the performance of the shifters leaves a lot to be desired. One of the most common complaints with this bike is that there’s a significant lag when you change gears.

If you’re looking for a performance road bike, then you’re going to have go over the $200 limit. However, if you’re looking for a daily everyday rider for pavement, the Kent Gzr700 is our top pick for the best cheap road bikes under $200!

Pros

  • Great build quality
  • Feels very reliable
  • Comfortable

Cons

  • Slight gear lag

Max4out Road Bike

ALSO GREAT
8.5/10 Our Score
  • Brand:Max4out
  • Frame Material: Aluminum
  • Frame Size: 19″
  • Wheel Size: 700c
  • Brake Style: Disc
  • Number of Speeds: 14-speed
  • Weight: 16kg

If you want to get a bicycle that not only gets you from to and fro, but also stands out then the Max4out is a great option. The very first thing that you notice about the Max4out is the high quality frame and the paint job.

It definitely doesn’t look like a road bike under $200. However, it still suffers from the same issue that all cheap road bikes under 200 suffer from, the performance. If you’re expecting to blitz through on pavement with this cycle that’s not going to happen.

If you want to ride it for everyday commutes though the Max4out is a great option. It features a Shimano 14-speed system which offers a lower number of gears in comparison to the other best cheap road bikes under 200. However, the performance of the system is very good.

You get to experience snappy gear changes and have the ability to react quickly to any change in the terrain. While the bike might be almost perfect for everyday riding, there is a slight issue. The seat is incredibly uncomfortable. It’s narroy and doesn’t offer a comfortable sitting position.

With a replacement seat you could make things a lot easier for yourself. You can also make things easier for yourself by taking the bike to a mechanic for assembly. It’s quite challenging to put together and will cost you a trip to your local bike mechanic.

However, if you’re willing to do a little bit of extra maintenance, the Max4out is definitely a bike that’s worth the investment.

Pros

  • High quality frame
  • Great paintjob
  • Snappy gear changes

Cons

  • Only 14-speed
  • Seat is very uncomfortable

Why Trust us?

As part of USAALL we strive to find the best deals and high quality bikes that meet our high standards.  We use both first hand reviews as well as taking into consideration both positive and negative reviews from sites like Amazon and Walmart before we suggest them to our visitors.  Therefore you can be sure that all the bikes we recommend have hundreds of positive reviews.

Who are They for?

Road bikes are primarily for users who commute to work or a user who’s sole purpose is to use the bike on the road and paved surfaces.

Users who plan to use the bike on single tracks roads and trails should checkout our other guides in the Similar Reviews section at the bottom of this page.

Cheap road bikes under 200 should be aimed at users who are looking to get into road cycling.  Beginners at road cycling should always use a cheaper bike to start off with to make sure they are comfortable with commuting on the roads.  Before you go out and by an expensive road bike.

Even if you’re not a beginner.  The road bikes reviewed provide a good range of budget chocies that are suitable for anyone looking to purchase a road bike.

How we Picked and Tested?

We first off narrowed down our search for cheap road bikes under 200 by looking on popular eCommerce websites and checking the reviews.  From this we gathered a list of the best road bikes under 200 that had hundreds of positive reviews across those sites.

We then narrowed down the search to four road bikes that we have reviewed in this post by speaking to an experienced cyclist who uses road bikes to commute to work on a daily basis.  From his conclusions we chose the three standard road bikes.  But he also suggested the single speed 6KU as an alternative for someone who commutes within the city as a good alternative to the other cheap road bikes under 200 that we looked at.

Sizing and Adjustments

Choosing the right size frame is important to making sure the bike you purchase is the right size.  A bike size chart can be seen below for the recommended frame sizes depending on your height. road bike size chart

Once you’ve purchased your new road bike it’s important to make sure that the saddle height is correct.

Having the saddle at the wrong height doesn’t just make the ride a bit uncomfortable but you’ll also start to get pain in your knee.

When setting your saddle height it’s important that there is a slight bend in your leg when your foot is on the pedal and at the furthest distance.  See the image below for the optimal saddle height.

correct road bike saddle height

You’ll notice that when the pedal is at the bottom of the crank there is still a slight bend in your leg.

This is so your not over stretching when pedaling which can lead to knee pain.

Care and Maintenance

If you want your bike to last a long time.  Then it’s important to keep good care and maintenance.

The five basic care and maintenance tips any cyclist should do are:

Ensure the Drivetrain is Clear and Lubricated

If you hear the sound of metal grinding this could be a sign of your drive train not being lubricated.  Not keeping your drive train lubricated increases the chances of your drive train causing you problems.  It’s also important to make sure you remove all the dirt that can clog up your drive train.

Keep Tires at the Correct Pressure

Keeping your tires at the right pressure should be near the top of your list.  Having your tire pressures to low and you’ll have to work harder to keep at the high speeds you’ll get to on your road bike.  Likewise if you put to much pressure in your tires then you’ll start getting more flats.

Ensure all Bolts are Tight

It’s important to regular check your bikes nut and bolts and make sure they’re kept tight.  Loose nuts and bolts can lead to your bike rattling which isn’t a good sound.  And especially on road bikes you don’t want anything falling off the bike whilst your travelling at fast speeds.

Correctly Adjust Brakes

Once again because you’ll be travelling at fast speeds it’s important that you can stop effectively.  Not adjusting your brakes correctly increases your overall stopping distance which could put yourself in danger.

Keep the Bike Clean

Overall keeping your bike clean and keeping on top of all the maintenance tasks increases the life of the components and makes sure you won’t have to be buying a new bike anytime soon.

The Competition

Due to the budget being a t the low end.  When it comes to competition ion this price range there aren’t many competitors.  However our pick the Hiland road bike has a couple of close competitors.

The first competitor is that is also in the Kent RoadTech which we also reviewed.

If you can afford up to 300.  Then there are a few competitors that you should potentially look at.  One being the Vilano R2 on Amazon with similar specs to the Hiland Road Bike, but with an aluminium frame instead.

If you were thinking of getting a very popular American brand in Schwinn.  Then you’ll be looking at the 300 – 400 dollar range.  However, even though Schwinn Volare on Amazon may be out of your price range you know that you’ll be getting very high quality components as well as Schwinn’s limited lifetime warranty that they offer on almost all of there bikes.

Overall cheap road bikes under 200 there isn’t to much competition that match the quality and specifications of the four road bikes we reviewed.  However, moving up the price ladder is where it starts to get more competitive and brings you a much bigger choice.
