Why bananas good for cyclists

If you’re a cyclist you may or may not have heard about bananas being a really good source of food.  But why?

Bananas are known to be high in carbohydrate’s and whilst being easy to eat and digest.  They are the number one food for cyclists.  The banana is able to replace the electrolytes that you’ve lost whilst cycling.

What does a banana give you?

The average banana gives a cyclist 25-30g of carbohydrate which is used to resupply energy to our muscles.

Ultimately it comes down to how ripe the banana is to how quick the sugar in the fruit absorbs into the blood stream.  A green banana often has more fibers, however a brown banana releases energy quicker and is better if you need the energy straight away.

When to eat bananas?

Bananas work really well if you are planning a long bike ride.  It’s always best to eat bananas before you endure your bike ride as like we mentioned above other than the brown bananas energy gets released over time.  Which gives you energy throughout the entire of you bike ride.

As well as eating bananas when your planning a bike ride.  Bananas are also good if you aren’t cycling.  Bananas are known to reduce your appetite, which makes them a good snack in between meals.  Preferred to grabbing a biscuit.

Alternative ways to eat bananas?

If you aren’t a fan of eating a banana on it’s own.  Chopping the banana up and mixing it in with a smoothie is a very good idea.
